went to the Morris Thompson Visitor Center.
It had several good displays on Fairbanks people & animals.
Some Athabascan First Nation students put
on the "Stampede Show" They did some dances, & the one girl was amazing with the fiddle!! They were actually influenced in some of their newer music from the miners, & were square dancing to it.
We went down to Graehl Park for a picnic by
the river. It was warm & beautiful!!!
There were kayaks & people on paddleboards.
Next on the itinerary was the Large Animal Research Station. This program is through the University. They had Musk Ox & Reindeer. We probably learned more than we needed to know, but I'm forgetting already (sad)
The 2 babies are back there behind mom
Reindeer herd far off.
The reindeer shed their antlers every year & grow increasingly larger racks
We went to see the Alaska Pipeline. The machines are called "pigs" They travel through the pipeline to clean it.
This is Felix Pedro (actually from Italy) but
shortened his name) He was the first to discover gold in Fairbanks.
Now to the 2nd Day
Steve's favorite, the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum. Amazing, beautifully restored cars. They also had mannequins wearing clothes from the era. Cars were from 1898-1930's.
The Workshop
This tractor pulls logs through the snow
They had some fun films of these types of cars in Alaska on some old roads & crossing rivers.
After a long time there, we headed to Chena Hot Springs, about an hours drive. We went to a State Park and had lunch by the Chena River.
Off to the resort where the hot springs are.
Tomorrow we are off to Denali. I think wifi coverage may be questionable. I am hoping over the 4 days to find some. We will content
ourselves amongst the wildlife otherwise.
I'm glad the Fire didnt run you out. Thanks for sharing the blog! It looks like you went to some of my favorite places :)!
