Sorry kids Grandpa isn't coming home!!

Steve got eaten by a bear!! (but I got this
really good picture)

"The rumor of my death has been greatly exaggerated!!" Steve

Ok, on to better things!!

On Monday the mechanic came to the campground. It took him all of 5 minutes to replace a fuse in the auto jack.  $30. doesn't sound like much when you're stuck !!

We took a long drive (without our trailer)
to Captain Cook State Rec Area.  We had a lovely picnic at the beach.  When we got there, we saw a few rocks in the water.  A couple of hours later more rocks popped up
& more sand bars.  It was part of that bore
tide.  It sucks out of the whole Cook Inlet.

We stopped by a lake. I swear they have a lake every 10 miles in Alaska!!

A pretty slow day so onto the next.

We went to the Soldotna Homestead Museum.  The 2 women working there were actually children of Homesteaders.

If you wanted to homestead you had to clear 20 acres  & grow on the land, as well as have a habitable home for 5 years.  These women were there between 1940 to 1958.

Only Russian Fur traders were there before
late 1800's.  Gold was discovered in the 1880's to 1900.  Alaska was a territory.

It wasn't till oil was found that the US decided to make them a state & began building roads & they got electricity.

These are cabins from 1940's.

This is a copy of the check & the document purchasing Alaska from the Russians.
The Russians wanted gold, not a check.  The US didn't have enough gold & had to borrow it from England.
Alaska was purchased in 1867 for 7.2 million
as it would increase US lands by 20%.

End of history lesson.

We took about a mile walk at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.  We didn't see any wildlife!.

We headed for Homer & I'll share that next time.
