Earthquake, dog sleds & a mine.

Anchorage Day 1- First We drove out to see the Captain Cook Statue & our first view of the Pacific Ocean.

We headed downtown to the Alaska Experience Theater to experience the huge 9.2 Anchorage Earthquake in our seats.

We hit up the "largest" souvenier shop in Alaska to get gifts for the family.  They won't get them till Christmas because we will be broke by then!! We walked around downtown.

We drove out to Earthquake Park for a picnic & to read a lot more about the damage

Anchorage Day 2

We went to church then to:

The long awaited Iditarod Sled Dog Museum.

The Iditarod is a 1,000 mile sled dog race from Anchorage to Nome.
We have noticed how much the dogs love to run & pull both at Denali & here.

They bark & want to be picked.  We saw a very enlightening film on how well they are fed & taken care of by their owners & Veterinarians. The dogs are very friendly.

The cart ride was fast & fun.

They had new baby puppies to love & snuggle

Our next stop was the Independence Gold Mine.  This was quite the little town from
about 1920's to 1946.

 The Mine Superintendent's house inside

 Barracks for Bachelors
Inside the game & movie hall
The Superintendent's house outside

The workers made $.75 cents an hour which was really good for then.. But they had to work 8 hr days 7 days a week. Barracks equipped with heat, indoor plumbing & showers.

Misc other buildings

The Commissary.

The Foremen's families had it good. 2 bedrooms, bath , kitchen & sitting room.

That's the end of the tour for today.
